FAQ

How Does Chiropractic Work?

Chiropractic is based on the premise that your body is self-healing, self-regulating, and controlled by your nervous system. Millions of signals flow from your brain and down your spinal cord to every organ and tissue in your body.

These signals are sent back to the brain to confirm your body is working correctly. This network of signals can be interfered with by a condition called subluxation.

Subluxations are diagnosed by chiropractors when the moving bones of the spine are out of alignment and irritating nerves. Chiropractors perform specific spinal adjustments to help correct subluxations and then health returns through a properly functioning nervous system.

How do you get subluxations?

The three basic causes of subluxations are physical, emotional, and chemical.

Physical causes can be slips, falls, accidents, repetitive movements or improper lifting.

Emotions such as fear, anger, grief, anxiety can cause subluxations.

Alcohol, pollution, drugs, and a poor diet are examples of chemical causes.

How do you know if you have a subluxation?

The only sure way to know if you have subluxations is to have a thorough examination by a licensed chiropractor who can locate and detect the severity of the subluxation.

Many subluxations don’t have warning signs or signals much like the early stages of cancer or tooth decay.

What conditions do chiropractors treat?

Nerve related conditions are best helped by chiropractic.

A few examples are:

Do I have a “pinched nerve”?

A pinched nerve is not very common. It is more typical that spinal bones irritate, stretch, or rub on the nerve.

There is also a muscle, joint and soft tissue component to the subluxation.

How do chiropractors treat subluxations?

There are many methods or techniques that chiropractors use to treat subluxations. Some methods involve the doctor’s hands, or a special instrument, or table.

The most common method involves a quick thrust to the joint to improve motion called an adjustment. A noise may be heard when the adjustment is performed, which is caused by the release of gas into the fluid around the involved joint.

Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Yes, after doing a thorough exam the chiropractor can better determine if you have a problem that is suitable for care.

When comparing the statistics, chiropractic adjustments are about 100 times safer than taking over-the-counter pain relievers.

How many adjustments will I need?

The number of adjustments recommended will vary depending on how long the problem has been going on and your individual health goals.
